As predicted, Adele’s sophomore album 21 is set to bow atop the Billboard 200 next week with sales totalling anywhere between 225-250k. The big numbers are a result of pre-orders (60k), as well as huge digital numbers and strong out-of-the-gate retail sales.
In a year where the record for the lowest first-week sales has been broken three times, Adele’s numbers are a huge accomplishment, and far higher than this week’s number one album, Justin Bieber’s Never Say Never – The Remixes, which is set to do around 163k. In fact, if predictions stay on track, Adele will have the highest first-week sales since Taylor Swift’s Speak Now did 276k at the beginning of January, but it should be noted that Taylor was still experiencing the huge benefit of the post-Christmas sales surge at the time.
