Heath Ledger Oscar Buzz For ‘Dark Knight’ Performance Continues
With his portrayal of comic-book villain The Joker garnering some of the most glowing reviews in recent memory, the late actor Heath Ledger is already being considered by film industry insiders around the world for an Academy Award nomination, even though voting for the 2009 Oscars doesn’t begin for almost 6 months and despite the fact “The Dark Knight” has yet to be released in theatres.
His performance in the film referred to as a “triumph” as well as "manically mesmerizing" and "an unforgettable, genuinely creepy, villain" this weekend by Australian film critics, the praise from down under is only the latest in a long line of indications that Ledger may be the second actor in history to win a posthumous Oscar Award for acting.
“I know I'm not the first to suggest this, but he'll likely get at least an Oscar nod (if not the win) for Best Supporting Actor” said writer/director and comic-book enthusiast Kevin Smith on his blog last month.
"If there's a movement to get him the first posthumous [acting] Oscar since Peter Finch won for 1976's ‘Network,’” wrote Rolling Stone Magazine’s Peter Travers, “sign me up.”
(The first and last actor to win an Academy Award after his death, Finch was awarded the Oscar shortly after his death in January 1977 for his still widely celebrated portrayal of disgruntled newsman Howard Beale.)
Ledger’s co-stars in “The Dark Knight” have also been vocal in their support for an Oscar nod, with lead-actor Christian Bale saying that Ledger has “raised the bar.”
"Heath had this frequency none of us could hear," said Gary Oldman , who Lt James Gordon in the film. "The Academy tends to overlook movies like this, but this acting is so good it's going to be very hard for them to avoid it.”
On Friday, during a ceremony outside Mann’s Chinese Theatre in which he sank his hands and feet in concrete, veteran actor Michael Caine (who plays butler Alfred Pennyworth in the film) said, “I think he'll get a posthumous Oscar nomination at least - I thought he was extraordinary."
Ledger, who was 28 years-old at the time of his death, received an Oscar nomination in 2006 for his role in “Brokeback Mountain.”
