Parliament yesterday passed a resolution to grant Barbadian Grammy Award winner Robyn Rihanna Fenty a parcel of land at Apes Hill, St. James.

Leading off the debate in the Lower House yesterday morning, Minister of Housing and Lands, Michael Lashley told his fellow Members of Parliament that the land which Government purchased from construction magnate Sir Charles Williams for $100,000, has a market value of $1.2 million.

He said that by giving Rihanna the land, Government was reinforcing its commitment to the persons who are able to place Barbados on the map.

According to Lashley, while Rihanna is being given the land, there is a condition. He explained that in the event she sells the land within 15 years of receiving it, Government would have to be reimbursed the price it paid for the land.

While the opposition supported the resolution, deputy opposition leader, Dale Marshall took issue with the condition that has been put in place, contending that they can see no reason for the condition being imposed.

“The amount of money that is going to be repaid to the Crown is only $100 000 and I honestly feel Sir that if this Chamber is going to resolve to make Ms Fenty a gift, let us make a gift. It is a parcel of land in Apes Hill; it befits her standing as an international artiste. To think that the Government is going to claw back $100 000 if Ms Fenty should decide to sell it, I think is a little unreasonable Sir. It is a gift that I believe that the Government is giving to her on behalf of the people of Barbados and to impose a condition on it I don’t think is necessary Mr Speaker. Give her the land wholly and solely and if she should decide to sell it within the 15 year period, it is hers to dispose of,” he maintained.
