"BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER" ALUMS CHARISMA CARPENTER AND JAMES MARSTERS GUEST STAR --- Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) meet Maggie Stark (guest star Charisma Carpenter), a witch who has unleashed her wrath on a small town, resulting in numerous deaths. Sam and Dean track down her husband, Donald (guest star James Marsters), to see if he can help. Donald tells the brothers that Maggie is mad at him for having an affair and is taking it out on the townspeople. Phil Sgriccia directed the episode written by Brad Buckner & Eugenie Ross-Leming (#705).

'Supernatural' gets witchy with 'Buffy' reunion: Your questions, answered!


The super-gory episode reminds us of the early seasons, in that the case-of-the-week is chock full of fun twists and turns, but the focus is still on the evolving relationship between Sam and Dean. Though the Winchesters aren't being totally honest with each other -- they've never exactly been open books -- their bond is strong, repaired after last season's ups and downs.

heartTVDforever: Is Jared Padalecki shirtless in this episode?
We're so glad you guys are focused on the deep, emotional plot points. No, Sam is not shirtless, but he is very, very sweaty. Get ready to meet the guy Dean calls "new Sam." New Sam goes for runs.

hannahrodgers: I just miss Castiel.
So does Dean. He's still plagued by nightmares about Castiel, among other things.

V_HaleH_V: Are they gonna address Dean's drinking a bit more in this episode?! Last episode it was mentioned several times, so I'm curious!
It will be addressed... and addressed... and addressed. Dean is self medicating an awful lot, and it's starting to get on Sam's nerves more than usual. There's some drinking-on-the-job happening, which, as you'll remember from Season 2, was once a Winchester faux pas. Let's just say Sam should probably be designated driver all the time now.

Oh, they can. This episode is definitely more of a stand-alone mystery, but the Leviathan who wants to dip the Winchesters in hot cheese and eat them for dinner is still on their trail. They'll get some help from an unexpected ally in that department.

We'll say this: Marsters and Carpenter are so awesome in this episode that we're about to start campaigning for a return appearance.

TMATOTB: What's the best spell the witches use on each other?
There are lots of good ones - and lots of gross ones. If you'll recall from Season 3, Dean isn't a fan of witches because there tend to be a lot of bodily fluids strewn about when they get heated, and this is no exception. Our favorite spell, however, involves cupcakes. Bleeding cupcakes.

kazamigorical: Is there any brother moments in it? I'm expecting there not to be sadly :(
They're on better terms than they've been in a while, but Dean isn't really opening up to Sam. He's getting tired of the job, as we saw last week, and Sam knows that something's wrong and wants to help. The good news is, their problems aren't with each other, for once.

Supernatural 7.05 Advance Preview: 8 Things You'll See in "Shut Up, Dr. Phil"

This Friday, witches make a return appearance in Supernatural, and two old WB actors make a return to the WB's successor network. Buffy cast members Charisma Carpenter and James Marsters play Maggie and Don Stark. Unfortunately, Don stepped out on his wife and now the couple are going through a painful separation, made all the more painful because Maggie has some witchy mojo that she doesn't mind throwing around to get vengeance on the people who betrayed her. Sam and Dean, meanwhile, catch on to the deaths (by typing the words "freaky accident" into a search engine, no less) and hightail it to town. But when Maggie realizes the "FBI agents" are actually hunters, will the Winchesters be able to put her down before she kills again?

We've screened the episode and want to tell you about a few things you will be seeing on Friday night:

(1) Continuity of the things that are important. Some of you may have been disappointed that Dean didn't feel guilty about what happened to Castiel when he was on trial in last week's episode. I'm here to tell you that the angel is not far from Dean's thoughts. In fact, poor Dean is having nightmares about his guilt, and Cas features in them. It doesn't mean a return of our favorite angel, but it does mean that no one has forgotten about him. In addition, the Leviathans make a return appearance in this episode, despite being absent last week. They are still on the Winchesters' trail and they're closing in quickly.

(2) New Sam. New Sam is a bit like Old Sam, actually, but without all of the angst. New Sam likes to get up early in the morning and go running, which is another continuation of his life-long healthy kick. Dean does not approve ("Someone better be chasing you" he grumbles), which leads us to....

(3) Dean's commitment to pop culture jokes, even when he's wrong. I've got two words for you: Lance Armstrong. You'll see what I mean.

(4) The Buffy reunion. I haven't spent much time watching the newer roles that Carpenter and Marsters have done, so it was strange not to see Marsters in a duster with shockingly bleached hair, for example. What's nice is that Carptenter's character, however, has a bit of the bitchy Cordelia Chase in her. This is a great pair of Buffy alums to bring together in another show, because Cordelia and Spike didn't share a lot of screentime, so it was fun to see these two actors together in one show.

(5) Throwbacks to several past Supernatural episodes. It's kind of amazing how many hints there are to previous Supernatural episodes, whether they're meant to be intentional or not. Off the top of my head I noticed similarities to "Playthings", "Wishful Thinking", "Children Shouldn't Play With Dead Things", "Malleus Maleficarum" (besides the witch thing...I'm thinking of a specific scene in that episode), and "Bugs" (don't freak out, it's not a bad thing).

(6) Really gross deaths. After a while, you kind of get desensitized to the violence in Supernatural, don't you? Dean decapitates vampires and you just think "huh, I can't believe they can show that on network TV at 9:00 p.m.". But then a gross episode comes along, like "My Bloody Valentine", and you realize you probably shouldn't be eating while watching this show. Witches do not play around, people, I assure you. The death scenes get progressively grosser - and more creative - as the episode plays out.

(7) The realization that Sam and Dean's relationship is basically like a marriage. Think about it, these two spend all of their time together, almost exclusively, and have for years. Their world is also very insular. It's like the most platonic marriage in the history of mankind. Parallels are drawn between their relationship and that of the Starks.

( The classic Winchester relationship. Despite the fact that Sam is most recently out of Hell, this season feels a lot like season 4 in terms of how the brothers interact (which is also like their season 2 relationship, to be honest). They are absolutely getting along again, even enough to tease each other. But Dean is beaten down emotionally and he has secrets that he's keeping from Sam (not only the Amy secret, but the sheer weight of his guilt, which is similar to how he felt after John gave up his life for him). Meanwhile, he's drinking the moment he wakes up from bad dreams (the alcoholism is getting worse, in fact) and Sam is desperately trying to get his brother unload. But Dean carries the weight of the world on his shoulders and even when he wants to turn that fact into a joke, you know that it's true.

Note: to be clear, because some people are concerned, I don't mean to suggest that the brothers are in a bad place or that their relationship is regressing. Like I said, the brothers' relationship is like a marriage, which can have rough patches. They are getting along and Sam is desperate to know why Dean is so sad so that he can help his brother. It's just that Dean wants to keep his guilty feelings to himself, which is how he reacted after coming back from Hell, and this is completely consistent with Dean's desire to keep his feelings to himself throughout the whole series.
